Composing Your Credit Card Symphony

The core principle of a sound credit card strategy is simple: your cards should complement and leverage your existing lifestyle and spending habits, not complicate them. A good card either elevates your current experience or provides superior value for what you already spend — like an instrument that fits naturally into the song you're already playing.
Key Principles for Choosing the Right Card
When building your wallet, keep these fundamental points in mind. Each card is a different instrument, and the goal isn't to collect them all — it's to assemble the right ensemble for the music you actually make with your money.
A Diversified Personal Card Strategy
A common strategy involves using specialised cards to capture the best rewards from different spending categories. One card for groceries, another for travel, a third for online spend — each playing its part, each earning its keep. The orchestra only works when every instrument is in the right section.
Understanding Foreign Currency Transaction (FCY) Fees
When using a Singapore-issued credit card overseas or online in a foreign currency, you will typically be charged an FCY fee. It's a small surcharge on every note you play outside your home key — and over time, those surcharges add up.
Important FCY Caveats
Avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC): If offered the choice to pay in Singapore Dollars while overseas, decline it and choose the local foreign currency. DCC is processed at a merchant's marked-up rate, often with an additional service fee totalling 1% to 5% on top of the poor exchange rate — making it significantly more expensive than paying in foreign currency with your card. It sounds convenient, but it plays out of tune.
The Exchange Rate is Separate: The FCY percentage fee (e.g. 3.25%) is applied on top of the base currency conversion rate used by the card network — Visa, Mastercard, or Amex. Two charges, stacked.
0% FCY Alternatives: Cards like the Trust Card or multi-currency wallets (e.g. YouTrip, Revolut) are exceptions, offering a 0% FCY fee. However, always check for other fees such as ATM withdrawal charges or weekend currency markups, as their pricing structures differ from traditional credit cards. A different instrument with a different tuning — read the sheet music before you play.
The art is in the arrangement. No single card does everything well, just as no single instrument carries a symphony. Choose your instruments deliberately, know what each one is for, and let the ensemble work together.
